CPF LIVE! with Kristen Allison, PhD, CCC-SLP

CPF Executive Director Rachel Byrne and speech therapist and researcher, Kristen Allison, PhD, CCC-SLP, discuss communication, barriers to participation, and research in speech and communication for individuals with Cerebral Palsy.

As much as possible, you want to try to empower children to learn how to compensate for communication breakdowns as independently as possible by using strategies like asking the child to repeat what they said again, and to repeat it more slowly or to exaggerate certain sounds and words that can help make their speech more clearly understood. For other kids, maybe it's using a low tech augmentative communication device, or knowing when to switch to their AAC device, to repair these communication breakdowns.
