Teaching Your Parents

One thing that parents can say to start a conversation with their kids is, "Let's talk".

Having this discussion with your child may be difficult for a parent because you're switching roles, and now the child becomes the teacher and the parent becomes the student.

A 10 year old can teach a parent by talking, by expressing their feelings, by saying, "This is how I need to do things and this is why".

My mom was one of those cool moms. She really tried to understand what it was like when I had to do certain things and she has to teach me how to do it. When I hit puberty and I had to start shaving my legs, she actually put herself in the position that I would be in physically in order to be able to show me how to do certain things.

One thing that I would tell a parent who tries to understand the child who has a disability, let them grow, let them figure it out and guide them through the process. It's something that they need to experience in order to be able to accept themselves later on.
